Dream Theater was formed by Berklee College of Music students John Petrucci, bassist John Myung, and drummer Mike Portnoy. Originally named Majesty, the band then expanded with the inclusion of keyboard player Kevin Moore and vocalist Chris Collins.

Majesty released an eight-song demo, Majesty Demo, which sold 1,000 copies within six months. In 1986, vocalist Chris Collins left Majesty, and was replaced by Charli Dominici in late 1987.

The group decided to change their name to ‘Dream Theater,’ inspired by a movie theatre in California. Dream Theater began working on their first full-length album after signing with Mechanic Records.

Cutting ties with the record label and losing their vocalist once more, the band set out to find both. In 1991 Canadian vocalist James LaBrie joined the team, and shortly after Dream Theater signed with Atco Atlantic. The music video from ‘Pull Me Under,’ of their next album became an MTV hit, before facing more challenges.

With many band members coming and going over the years, Dream Theater continued to produce much loved music through the 1990’s – 2000’s. The current line up we know and love today features:

James Labrie – Lead Vocals (1991 – Present)

John Petrucci – Guitars, Backing Vocals (1985 – Present)

Jordan Rudess – Keyboards (1999 – Present)

John Myung – Bass Guitars (1985 – Present)

Mike Mangini – Drums, Percussion (2011 – Present)
