In our current climate of sport, we often see records being made and broken week on week. It is from this that people term records as ‘borrowed’. To be loaned by a particular player, team, sport or even venue for a period of time until one is ready enough to borrow it back off them. In saying this, there are a few exceptions for records that either appear unbreakable or are only broken once in a blue moon.

With this in mind, here are a few of these sporting records as they stand to this day.

Archie Thompson

April 11, 2001 is a date that has etched its way into the football history books for more ways than one. It was on this day that Australia faced up against American Somoa in a qualifying match for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Australia went on to win this matchup with a landslide 31 – 0 victory, with 13 of these goals being put through by Australia’s striker Archie Thompson. This individual performance by Thompson earned himself a place in the record books for most goals scored by a player in an international match.

Sir Donald Bradman

It doesn’t take a cricket fanatic to know the name of Sir Donald Bradman. He is royalty in the sporting world, and rightly so. The boy from Bowral retired from cricket in 1948 with a Test batting average of 99.94. It is likely that we will not see this extraordinary average rivalled anytime soon.

Melbourne Cricket Ground

Melbourne Cricket Ground, more commonly known as the ‘G, is one of the largest stadiums in the world. It was at the ‘G that the highest crowd attendance was recorded for a VFL/AFL game. It was the 1970 Grand Final that saw Carlton come back from a 44-point half time deficit to beat Collingwood, only to be witnessed live by a crowd 121,696 strong.

Cameron Smith

37 years of age and coming up to his 420th game played in the NRL; Cameron Smith without a doubt has one of the most impressive Rugby League resumes of all time. From his first-ever NRL points back in 2003, Cameron now holds the all time record of most points scored with 2,664 and rising.

The individual acolodes for Melbourne Storm Captain don’t stop there with Cameron also holding the title of most games won by a player (299), and most goals kicked (1,240).

John Coleman

When we think of footy debutants, we usually associate the thought of their first game with a few minutes game time, a couple of nervous touches and maybe a highlight reel play if they have really performed. This debutant stigma was defied by John Coleman back in 1949 going on to kick 12 goals in his debut AFL game for Essendon. This record still stands to this day with his closest rival debutant kicking 9 goals.
