“Just because I can’t feel the ground, doesn’t mean it’s not there.” Fear is a natural and necessary tool in our survival toolkit- it is an inherent instinct that protects us, assesses danger, advises when to fight and when to take flight, and at the root of its purpose, it’s designed to keep us alive. For that, fear deserves our greatest respect.

But fear can also debilitate us, and cause us to cease moving forward, which can become detrimental to our daily lives. Working within ourselves to understand the parameters of our fears, to come to terms with them, and to then override and rationalize- and take action past them- is a skill that begins to pave the way to success.

In the Lunch & Learn masterclass with Dr Gill Hicks, who was one of the only survivors of the London terrorist bombing on July 7th, 2005, you will learn how Gill took the pain, shock, trauma, and ultimate fears of her extreme experience, and has been able to tap into the source of her fears to create strategies for managing fear in all aspects of life.

With an impressive design career before the bombing in London that tore Gill’s life apart, Gill now dedicates her life to being an advocate for peace- and conquering fears is an important step in bringing peace to the world. In Gill’s masterclass, you will hear about the moment that changed her life, and how confronting the end allowed her to start again. Aside from the physical changes in Gill’s life, it’s her mindset and her mission that speaks the loudest now:

Q: How is your life different now that you’ve made (your life mission) changes?

A: To honour the vow that I made in the aftermath of the blast, I explored where I could best make that difference, especially given my physical challenges. Speaking to the minds, reaching the hearts of those who held extremist, indeed violent extremist views was the natural path. I held no bitterness, no hatred, I was filled with the absolute love that was shown to me by those who fought to save my life. This was the remarkable ‘difference’, this was my unwavering strength, this ability to hold the value of life through the lens of love rather than hate was not only my saviour but the clarity to everything that was presented along my new path.

Q: Why do you feel it is important to share your philosophy with the community?

A: Knowing ‘us’, knowing the true capability of human beings is one of the most extraordinary insights I’ve taken from returning from the brink of death. It’s become my life’s work, to find the most effective ways of communicating this – to know that we are able and capable to evolve and ‘be’ beyond our expectations. Sometimes in letting go we get to hold onto more of our deep and real selves.

In Gill’s masterclass, you will learn:

  • Understand how to identify fear
  • How to accept fear and its role
  • How to take action from fear with confidence
