Isolation is a great time to invest in some serious upskilling and make a fool of yourself from the comfort of your living room. The Australian Ballet is providing free online classes during isolation to help us all get moving. Whether you have twinkle toes or two left feet, we think it is a perfect opportunity to invest in you (for free).

Beginner

The Australian Ballet is providing classes for beginners, intermediate and advanced dancers. The beginner class focuses on the fundamentals of ballet, slowly transitioning from the barre to the centre of the room. This class is perfect for those with no prior experience, or perhaps dancers who have taken a hiatus.

Intermediate

Intermediate classes focus on a key component of ballet, technique. This class is perfect for those who have dance experience or have just finished the beginner class. Focused on developing correct body alignment, strength and coordination, this class is the stepping stone to movement and execution.

Advanced

The advanced class allows dancers to feel and develop the musicality of centre work. Perfect for those with refined and confident technique, the lyricism and movement of dancing will be developed and refined.

What Do You Need?

We understand not everyone has a dance studio or barre just laying around, but you will need something to support you. The Australian Ballet suggests a sturdy object that reaches your hip height such as a kitchen bench, chair or bar stool. Remember this object will be your number one support during your dance journey, so stack some books or a heavy object if it is too light.

Where Should You Do the Class?

The Australian Ballet has designed classes to fit within the confinements of your home, requiring about two square meters. Remember to move any furniture out of the way and ensure your floor is not too slippery.

What Should You Wear?

Comfort is key in isolation, so be sure to wear something you can move and dance in easily.  Soft dance shoes or ballet flats are ideal if you have them, and if not barefoot is recommended.

Good luck on your dance journey with The Australian Ballet. Whether you are a first-time dancer, or a long-time lover, we hope this little slice of movement keeps your spirit and energy high while indoors.
