Having enjoyed a stellar career since the release of his debut album ‘Feeler’, Pete Murray kicked off 2020 on a musical high with a brilliant performance at the Fire Fight Australian bushfire appeal concert at ANZ Stadium alongside a star studded line up including Queen. Then everything changed as the world went into lockdown.

Whilst we haven’t had the opportunity to see Murray perform live since February, he has taken the time to focus on writing new music. TODAY sees the release of his new single “Found My Place”.

We caught up with Pete to find out what he’s been doing in isolation, how those around him have been affected and to find out more about the new single.

You’ve come off what must have been an amazing high of your brilliant performance at Fire Fight to not playing at all. How have you coped with that?

The Fire Fight gig was a pretty special thing to be involved with. When you play on a huge stage like that and the sound is so massive coming through that PA, you don’t want to stop playing. It’s something I want to experience again! Not only did I enjoying playing live at that show but the feeling you get, knowing that you are helping raise money for a lot of people that really need it makes it even more special.

To be honest, I have really enjoyed the time off with family at home. It’s a strange time indeed. I’m putting out new music and I can’t play it live so this is really different for me, for sure.

How has isolation impacted the musicians and musical community around you?

Every musician is feeling the pinch of this. I feel for the guys who live week to week. The crew who really depend on live touring to keep them going or the session players who are in the same boat. It doesn’t matter what level you are at, we are all feeling it and we all have bills to pay and we all have to eat.

At some stage things will have to open up again and live music will definitely come back bigger and stronger than even. This may even be a blessing in disguise, as Australian artists could benefit more from live touring before international artists are allowed back in the country.

Are there any positives to have come out of this time for you?

Time with family is the big one for me, plus I have also had the time to get the new music right. There is always a rush to get everything finished before a new release, but this has actually given me the time to get it all ready and to make sure it is 100% right.

What are you most looking forward to about playing live again?

I love playing live with my band. I have a bunch of great players who I have played with over the years and it’s just amazing to get on stage with them. They are all talented at what they do, including my crew and everyone in my team I consider family. I also have a fantastic fan base and playing to them is always a pleasure.

Tell us about the new single.

‘Found My Place’ was a co-write I did in Nashville. This was the first time I have ever travelled overseas to write songs with other people. It was a great time and this session was a lot of fun. The lyrical direction that I took with this song was down the path of passing on wisdom to someone. I used my life as the reference and I wrote this about what would I say if I was talking to my kids about life.

Life isn’t easy as we all know, but when you start life, you think things will all just fall into place and everything will work out.  Life is more interesting than that. It’s all about the journey and being true to yourself and believing in yourself even when others don’t.
